How did I get to the point in my life where I am writing a Blog about evangelism? I have been a born again Christian for about 25 years now. I have studied, read, and taught the Bible for much of that time.
After reading Christian book after Christian book God finally told me, "Okay, now it is time to put what you have learned into action."
That was about 20 years ago. One thing I have learned over the years is what Jesus told us in Matthew 9:37, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few." could not be more true in today's world, especially in much of America. We need more people to evangelize.
According to Pew, the United States is about 65% Christian and really all you have to do is look at the news or society around you to know that cannot be possibly true.
According to Pew the world is about 69% without Jesus Christ. which sounds a bit more realistic.
How did I get started evangelizing? About 20 years ago I was given a Ray Comfort tract Are You a Good Person? That got me started passing around tracts. After years of doing ministries such as ushering, children's, global outreach, food pantry and more, I was now actually sharing Jesus with people.
I started out leaving them around in store restrooms quietly without anyone knowing it was me. As time has gone on I got brave enough to hand a tract to someone face to face.
20 years later I am now writing tracts and going door to door sharing Jesus in my town.
In the last 20 years I have been threatened, laughed at, yelled at, flipped off, cursed at. I have been told by Pastors I am doing it all wrong. I have been told by Pastors, people like you come and go all the time. I have been told by Pastors I need to earn the right to share Jesus with someone.
I have shared Jesus with elected officials as well as homeless people, ex-cons and addicts, housewives and business people, muslims, atheists, catholics and mormons.
I have done it online, in person, at events big and small, door to door, on street corners and in businesses.
It takes some time to get to the point you feel comfortable evangelizing to anyone just about anywhere, but if you do it enough it will become second nature.
One thing to remember once you get going is that when, not if, but when, someone tells you, you are doing it all wrong, Isaiah 55:11 tells us that whatever we put out there in God's name He will use for His purposes and will not return void.
As we go along, I will be getting into some of the different ways of evangelizing and the different experiences I have had with each one.
As you can tell by the cover photo on our home page, I have also been sending evangelism materials to Africa. The picture is from Nigeria where we have sent thousands of our very own Gospel of John with Commentary.
